Signatures of Hydrologic Function Across the Critical Zone Observatory Network

Despite a multitude of small catchment studies, we lack deep understanding how variations in critical zone architecture lead to hydrologic states and fluxes. This study characterizes dynamics 15 catchments the U.S. Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) network where hypothesized that our subsurface structure would illuminate patterns partitioning. The CZOs collect data sets characterize physical, chemical, biological subsurface, while also monitoring fluxes such as streamflow, precipitation, evapotranspiration. For first time, collate time series variables across CZO begin process examining signatures sites. We find with low baseflow indices high runoff sensitivity storage receive most their precipitation rain contain clay-rich regolith profiles, prominent argillic horizons, and/or anthropogenic modifications. In contrast, sites majority snow have more permeable profiles. seasonal variability water balance components is key control on dynamic range hydraulically connected zone. These findings us posit partitioning streamflow hydraulics are linked through coevolution but much work remains parse these controls out quantitatively.
